PENGUINS CUP QUARTERFINALS, FIRST-ROUND GAMES ON TAP MONDAY

Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League first-round action continues and the quarterfinals begin Monday in the 84 Lumber Penguins Cup Championship Series.

In Class AAA, North Hills (9-13-1) takes on unbeaten Mt. Lebanon (22-0-0) in a quarterfinal game at 7:30 p.m. at the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center.

The Indians, who surprised Upper St. Clair 4-2 in the first round, will try for their second-straight upset. However, North Hills faces a tough task in the Blue Devils, who have three of the PIHL Class AAA’s top five scorers. Tyler Murovich (24+43) leads the way with 67 points, while Shane Ferguson, a son of former Penguin George Ferguson, is second with 62 points (28+34). Josh Mandic is fifth with 52 points (18+34).

In the other Class AAA quarterfinals, Pittsburgh Central Catholic (14-7-2) takes on North Allegheny (19-3-0) at Bladerunners-Warrendale on Tuesday at 7 p.m.; Penn-Trafford (17-6-0) meets Bethel Park (17-4-1) at Bladerunners-Bethel Park on Wednesday at 7 p.m.; and Fox Chapel (14-7-2) plays Meadville (19-3-0) at the Meadville Area Recreation Center on Thursday at 7 p.m.

In Monday’s Class AA quarterfinal game, Greensburg Central Catholic (13-7-2) takes on Pine-Richland (18-1-2) at the Ice Connection at 7 p.m.

Josh Fodor is determined to get the Rams back to the Penguins Cup championship game. He leads all Class AA scorers with 63 points (23+40). Teammate Phillip Trombetta ranks sixth with 48 points (24+24).

In the other Class AA quarterfinals, Peters Township (14-8-0) meets West Allegheny (19-2-0) at the Airport Ice Arena, Thursday at 7 p.m.; Canon-McMillan (13-6-3) plays Bishop Canevin (15-4-2) at the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.; and Kittanning (13-5-4) meets Montour (14-6-1) at the RMU Island Sports Center on Thursday at 8:40 p.m.

Class A opens first-round action Monday with a pair of games. Conemaugh Valley (4-17-1) takes on Quaker Valley (21-1-0) at the Airport Ice Arena at 7 p.m., while Mars (13-9-0) travels to Bishop McCort (18-3-1) at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena at 7:45 p.m.

The other first-round games have Freeport (14-7-1) playing Sewickley Academy (14-8-0) at the Belmont Ice Complex, Wednesday at 8 p.m. and Westmont-Hilltop (9-12-1) taking on Serra Catholic (19-2-1) at the Rostraver Ice Garden, Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
