ONLY 18, CROSBY RANKS AMONG CANADIAN ELITE IN SCORING RACE

Sidney Crosby wasn’t selected to Canada’s Olympic team as an 18-year-old – due, in large part, to the incredible depth and experience of the defending gold medalists – but it is interesting to note that the Penguins’ rookie centerman ranks among the Canadian elite in the NHL scoring race.

At the Olympic break, Crosby was the No. 5 goal-scorer among Canadian-born players in the NHL with 28 goals, trailing only Philadelphia’s Simon Gagne (37), Carolina’s Eric Staal (36), Ottawa’s Dany Heatley (34) and San Jose’s Jonathan Cheechoo (34).

And he ranked No. 6 in points among Canadians with 65, trailing only San Jose’s Joe Thornton (81), Staal (75), Atlanta’s Marc Savard (72), Heatley (71) and Colorado’s Alex Tanguay (66).

Overall, Crosby is tied for 11th in the NHL in both goals and points.

He is the No.2 rookie scorer with his 65 points, trailing only Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin, who has 69. Crosby has a 15-point lead over the No. 3 rookie scorer, Marek Svatos of Colorado.
