SENATORS POST 5-2 WIN OVER PENGUINS

KANATA, Ontario – The Ottawa Senators scored three goals in the second period Monday night to post a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Ryan Malone got the Penguins on the scoreboard first 1:14 into the game, Pittsburgh’s quickest goal to open a game this year. On a two-on-one, he dished a pass to Eric Boguniecki, whose shot deflected off Senators goalie Ray Emery. Malone slammed the loose puck into the net. John LeClair had the other assist.

Christoph Schubert evened the score at 1-1 at 8:57.

Zdeno Chara gave the Senators a 2-1 lead 7:46 into the second period when he flipped a loose puck past Marc-Andre Fleury.

Bryan Smolinski deflected a shot past Fleury for a power-play goal and a 3-1 Ottawa lead at 10:33.

Peter Schaeffer gave the Sens a 4-1 edge with a power-play goal 1:03 later.

Boguniecki trimmed the deficit to 4-2 at 15:34. He skated down the right wing and rifled a hard shot that beat Emery, deflected off the far post and into the net. Malone and Josef Melichar had assists.

The Senators put the game away 51 seconds into the third when Schaeffer backhanded a shot past Fleury.

Ottawa had a 46-24 edge in shots. Fleury made 41 saves, while Emery added 22 stops.

The Penguins return home Wednesday to take on the Boston Bruins at Mellon Arena.

ICE CHIPS: Cory Cross and Jani Rita were the Penguins’ healthy scratches.
