PENS LEAD NHL IN INCREASED ATTENDANCE DURING JANUARY

Crowds at Mellon Arena Up 34 Percent Over January, 2004; NHL Sets January Attendance Record

The Pittsburgh Penguins led the National Hockey League in increased attendance for the fourth straight month during January. Crowds for Penguins games at Mellon Arena were up 34 percent over the similar period in January, 2004.

The NHL, meanwhile, posted the best January attendance in its 88-year history, attracting 3,426,119 fans to 204 total games and setting a league attendance record for the fourth straight month. The league’s January average of 16,795 represented 91.3 percent of arena capacity.

The Penguins led the way in increased January attendance among individual clubs, followed by Carolina (+23%), Tampa Bay (+21%), Calgary (+19%), Nashville (+15%) and Boston (+15%).

Overall this season, the Penguins have drawn an average crowd of 16,119 to their 26 home games - filling Mellon Arena to 95.2 percent of its capacity. They have had 11 standing-room-only sellouts and 17 crowds over 16,000.
