SWEDEN-FINLAND MATCHUP AT WJC FEATURES TWO PENGUINS ROOKIES

After a day off Sunday, the World Junior Championships resume Monday with a pair of quarterfinal games at the GM Place in Vancouver as Sweden takes on Finland at 7 p.m. (EST) and the United States meets the Czech Republic at 11 p.m.

Switzerland and Latvia battle at 4 p.m. in a relegation game.

The Sweden-Finland game pits two Pittsburgh Penguins prospects against each other. Forward Johannes Salmonsson (Pittsburgh’s 2004 second-round pick, 31st overall) has four points (2+2) for Sweden, while Tommi Leinonen, a defenseman, has two assists and six penalty minutes for Finland. Pittsburgh selected Leinonen in 2005’s fourth round (125th overall).

In Tuesday’s semifinal contests, Canada awaits the Sweden-Finland winter at 7 p.m., while Russia gets either the U.S. or Czech Republic.

Canada (4-0) features defenseman Kristopher Letang, a Penguins 2005 third-round pick (62nd overall). He has two assists and two penalty minutes. Meanwhile, Russian center Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh’s 2004 second-overall pick, shares the tournament scoring lead with four goals and four assists for eight points in four games for unbeaten Russia (4-0).
