BABY PENS EXPLODE FOR SEVEN GOALS IN 8:44, TROUNCE HERSHEY
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins exploded for an astonishing seven goals in a stretch of 8:44 of the first period and went on to pound the rival Hershey Bears, 8-1, Monday night in Wilkes-Barre.
The Baby Penguins lead the American Hockey League with a 25-3-2-1 record for 53 points, and they now hold a seven-point lead over second-place Hershey in the AHL’s East Division.
WB/S had killed off four straight penalties in the first period when rookie defenseman Noah Welch began the goal onslaught at the 9:43 mark.
Konstantin Koltsov scored twice and Maxime Talbot, Jonathan Filewich, Chris Kelleher and Kenny Corupe also chipped in goals as the Baby Pens built a 7-0 lead by the 18:27 mark of the first.
Andy Schneider added the final WB/S goal late in the third period – the first of his pro career – and Dany Sabourin stopped 32 of 33 shots to register his 12th victory of the season.
The win gave new coach Joe Mullen a 4-2 record in his first six games behind the WB/S bench.
The Baby Penguins play host to Hartford on Wednesday and Norfolk on Saturday.
