SENATORS UPEND PENGUINS, 4-1

KANATA, Ontario - Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist Thursday night to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Senators peppered Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury with 39 shots, while the Penguins managed 23 shots on goal.

Dany Heatley gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead with 2.6 seconds remaining in the first period. Spezza fired a cross-crease pass and Heatley buried the puck into the net right before the horn.

In the second period, Heatley appeared poised for his second goal, but Fleury made a series of acrobatic saves to deny him.

Pittsburgh's Ziggy Palffy rifled in a shot past Ray Emery's glove to tie the game at 1-1 with 11:41 left in the second period. Matt Hussey and Ryan Whitney earned assists on the goal.

Spezza gave the Senators a 2-1 lead when he backhanded a puck past Fleury with 8:23 on the clock. Antoine Vermette boosted Ottawa's advantage to 3-1 with 1:12 remaining in the period.

Christoph Schubert boosted the Senators' lead to 4-1 with a power-play goal 5:36 into the third period.

Fleury stopped 35 shots in the defeat. Sidney Crosby played in his first professional game in his native Canada, but did not register a point.

The Penguins travel to Washington at 7 p.m. Friday to take on the Capitals. Pittsburgh returns to Mellon Arena on Sunday for another contest against the Capitals.
