PENS LOSE TO SENS 3-0
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Pittsburgh Penguins are still searching for their first preseason win.
Friday night at Broome County Veterans Arena, the Ottawa Senators kept the Penguins out of the win column with a 3-0 triumph.
Ottawa (2-0) scored first when Brandon Bochenski poked a rebound past Sebastien Caron for a power-play goal with 3:19 left in the second period. Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza assisted on the goal.
Shortly after Bochenski’s goal, Pittsburgh’s Dennis Bonvie and Ottawa’s Danny Roy dropped the gloves with 2:06 on the clock. Roy got in a couple early shots, but Bonvie put the Senator on his back with a powerful right-handed blow.
The Penguins got a scare earlier in the period when Josef Melichar took a stick to the face at the start of the period. He skated into the locker room, but later returned to action.
In the third period, Heatley one-timed a shot past Caron to make it 2-0 with 5:14 remaining. Spezza and Bockenski assisted on the play.
Zdeno Chara fired in an empty-net goal late in the third period to boost the score to 3-0. Heatley assisted on the goal to complete the three-point night.
Dominik Hasek and Kelly Guard teamed up in goal to blank the Penguins.
The Penguins will meet the Senators again on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre.
