PENGUINS RE-SIGN DEFENSEMAN DICK TARNSTROM

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed defenseman Dick Tarnstrom, it was announced today by General Manager Craig Patrick.  Tarnstrom singed a one-year deal at $1.6 million, the amount he was awarded by an arbitrator on Saturday.

 Tarnstrom, 30, became the first defensemen in Penguins’ history to lead the club in scoring when he recorded 52 points (16+36) in 80 games during the 2003-04 season.  Additionally, Tarnstrom led the team in assists, power-play points (38), power-play goals (12), power-play assists (26) and average ice-time (24:02).  Tarnstrom tied for third on the team in goals and ranked second in shots on goal (158).

 Tarnstrom ranked sixth among NHL defensemen in power-play points and tied for first among NHL blue-liners in power-play goals in 2003-04.

 At the 2004 World Championships, Tarnstrom was named the tournament’s most outstanding defenseman, recording six points (4+2) in nine games for Sweden, winning a silver medal.

 Tarnstrom tied for sixth among defensemen in scoring in the Swedish Elite League during 2004-05, recording 25 points (7+18) in 50 games.  Tarnstrom ranked second on his team, Sodertalje SK, and first among defensemen in scoring.

 The 6-2 and 205 pound native of Sundbyberg, Sweden was claimed off waivers by the Penguins from the New York Islanders on August 6, 2002.  He has played in 141 games with the Penguins, recording 93 points (23+70).  In 203 NHL games with New York and the Penguins, Tarnstrom has recorded 112 points (26+86) and 126 penalty minutes.
