PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed defenseman David Koci, it was announced today by Penguins General Manager Craig Patrick.  In accordance with club policy, terms of the contract were not released.

Koci, 24, has appeared in 181 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) in the last four seasons, recording 21 points (3+18) and racking up 711 penalty minutes.  He also appeared in 81 games for the Wheeling Nailers (2001-2003), the Penguins’ East Coast Hockey League affiliate, tallying seven points (2+5) and 208 penalty minutes.

The 6-6, 230 pound defenseman appeared in 68 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton during the 2004-05 season, recording nine points (1+8) and 311 penalty minutes.  He set a new career-high in assists, points and penalty minutes in the regular season and was plus or even in 50 of 68 games.  Koci led the team in penalty minutes and ranked third in the American Hockey League in the same category.  A torn ACL in his knee on April 8 forced him to miss the remainder of the regular season as well as the Calder Cup playoffs.

Koci, a native of Prague, Czech Republic, was drafted by Pittsburgh in the fifth round (146th overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
