SIDNEY CROSBY EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW PART 1
The team at pittsburghpenguins.com had the opportunity to sit down with Sidney Crosby on Friday, August 12th as he was in town for Penguins’ rookie orientation. We left it up to the fans to determine the questions to ask Sid, and emails poured in from all over the globe. Thanks to all the fans who participated. Part 2 of the interview will be posted next week.
Sidney Crosby: Thanks for having me.
BG: We've solicited email for 4 days and we already have between 700 and 1000 so we want to first thank all of the fans for taking the time to email Sidney. We'll try to get as many of these answered as we can today in our session and we tried to pick different kinds of questions because certainly Sidney has had a lot of those thrown at him in the past couple of weeks. Some serious hockey questions and some light-hearted fare as well. Before we get to the first question, you've been in town for a couple of days now, give us your first impressions of the city.
Sidney Crosby: It’s been great, especially the people here. They have been very welcoming, and you can tell the city is very excited about the start of the season. It seems like there is a lot of energy and right now its just exciting to know that the season is going to start soon.
BG: “Hello Mr.Crosby. I've been a big fan of yours for a long time, and I was wondering, how old were you when you decided to start training and practicing to become good enough to be drafted into the NHL.”
Sidney Crosby: I think I have been practicing since I was 4 or 5 years old, but that wasn’t really practice. I was just having fun. It wasn’t as if I was putting in time- I just loved to play hockey, wether is was shooting or playing outside, whatever the case may be.
BG: So having a passion for the sport is going to go a long way to helping you get there?
Sidney Crosby: Yeah, exactly. You just have to love to do it. I don’t think it’s an issue of putting in time, or something like that. You just have to make sure you’re having fun with it and if you enjoy to do it, keep doing it. But if its something where you have to put in time- I don’t think its going to work.
BG: Bryan from Nashville, Tn writes in “How many goals do you want to score against the Nashville Predators on Jan. 15.? I will be there to watch the Pens.”
Sidney Crosby: (laughing) No answer to that one…but I never try to estimate how many goals I am going to get…go with the same frame of mind every game and hope that I can help in that way. Sometimes you can have a great night and the puck just doesn’t go in, and sometimes you might not play that well and score 2.
BG: Shawn from Morgantown, WV writes “Dear Sid,
I'm a 57 year old Pens fan, whose wife now has your picture on her bulletin-board at work. What can you tell me to ease my anxiety about your stealing away the love of my life? PS- she's only 44. and in pretty good shape, but doesn't cook or clean the house.”
Sidney Crosby: (laughing) I don’t know what to say…don’t worry. I think its fine…that’s pretty funny!
BG: Austin from Sacramento, CA writes: “Dear Sid, Who do you think would win in a fight, Indiana Jones or the Terminator?”
Sidney Crosby: The Terminator for sure. No doubt in my mind, he would win that one. He has more raw strength than Indiana Jones. I think he’d definitely come out on top.
BG: Are you a fan of all the Terminator movies?
Sidney Crosby: I didn’t see them all, just one of them. But that was enough to see the strength that that guy has.
BG: This question comes from Vince in Michigan. “A lot of articles at the draft talked about your close relationship with #3 overall pick Jack Johnson. Being that he is big defensemen, has he chided you already about not going in the corners when he is on the ice although that might not happen for awhile as he plans on attending college?”
Sidney Crosby: Actually, we’ve talked about that and he definitely knows that I will be in the corners the minute that he’s in there. I don’t think we’re guys who shy away from that. We’re competitive- I don’t think we can play ping-pong together without getting into an argument. It’s going to be a good battle when we’re out there. Nothing cheap, but we’re definitely going to play hard. I don’t think either of us will shy away from going into the corners.
