PENGUINS SIGN FREE AGENT RIGHT WING ZIGMUND PALFFY
(Has scored more than 300 goals, averaged more than a point a game, played in three All-Star Games)
The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed free agent right wing Zigmund Palffy, it was announced today by General Manager Craig Patrick. In accordance with club policy, terms of the multi-year contract were not released.
Palffy, 33, is one of the leading goal-scorers in the NHL over the past nine seasons. Since 1995-96, he has scored 308 goals for an average of 34.2 goals a season – ranking sixth in the NHL during that time period. He also has played in three NHL All-Star Games – 1998, 2001 and 2002.
In 642 career NHL games with the New York Islanders and Los Angeles Kings, Palffy has recorded 318 goals and 353 assists for 671 points.
The 5-10, 183-pound native of Slovakia has topped the 30-goal mark six times and the 40-goal mark three times in his NHL career.
“Ziggy is an explosive offensive player who will fit in well with what we are trying to do here in Pittsburgh,” Patrick said. “He is a natural goal-scorer who has been consistently productive throughout his NHL career. We think our fans will enjoy watching him play.”
In a span of three seasons from 2000-01 through 2002-03, Palffy scored 107 goals for the Kings (38, 32, 37). Although he was limited to 35 games because of a shoulder injury in 2003-04, he still produced more than a point a game with 16 goals and 25 assists for 41 points.
Palffy split the 2004-05 season between teams in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, playing a total of 49 games and producing 31 goals and 22 assists for 53 points. In 41 games for Slavia of the Czech Republic Extraleague, Palffy registered 21 goals and 19 assists for 40 points. In eight games for HK 36 Skalica of the Slovak Republic Extraleague, he had 10 goals and 3 assists for 13 points.
