The Pittsburgh Penguins will raise a new Stanley Cup banner at their 2009-10 regular season opener – Friday, Oct. 2 against the New York Rangers at Mellon Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
The full 82-game schedule, announced today by the National Hockey League, includes a home-and-home series with Stanley Cup finalist Detroit and six games each against Atlantic Division opponents – the Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders. The Penguins will play each division opponent three times at home and three times on the road.
It will be the Penguins’ final season in Mellon Arena, which opened in 1961 and began hosting NHL hockey when the Penguins joined the league in 1967. The new Consol Energy Center will open for the start of the 2010-11 NHL season.
Under a new scheduling system adopted last season, the Penguins will play 64 games against Eastern Conference teams and 18 games against Western Conference opponents. They will play each Western Conference team at least once, and will play home-and-home series with Anaheim and Minnesota in addition to Detroit.
Among Western Conference teams, Anaheim, Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Phoenix will visit Mellon Arena.
Western Conference road games will be played at Anaheim, Calgary, Columbus, Detroit, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Minnesota, San Jose and Vancouver.
The Penguins will hit the west coast in November (Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose) and travel to western Canada in January (Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver).
