Malkin Dubbed "A" Permanent Leader

By Sam Kasan
The rotating alternate captaincy is over. Penguins head coach Michel Therrien scrapped the monthly formula in favor of two permanent alternate captains to lead the team for the rest of the season and the postseason push.

Forward Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Sergei Gonchar were dubbed the team's permanent alternate captains. Brooks Orpik will wear the "A" until Gonchar returns from injury.

The "A" has come full circle for the Penguins. Malkin and Orpik each were named alternate captains to start the season in October. Therrien rotated the "A" on a monthly basis from that point forward.

The other Penguins to sport the "A" this season are: Rob Scuderi and Hal Gill (November), Jordan Staal and Matt Cooke (December), Ryan Whitney and Petr Sykora (January).
