The Pittsburgh Penguins, off to their best start since 1995-96, will travel to Detroit to meet the Red Wings Tuesday night in their first matchup since the Stanley Cup Finals. Game time at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit is 7 p.m. The game will be televised nationally by Versus.

The Penguins are 8-4-2 for 18 points – their best start through 14 games since the ’95-96 season, when they opened 8-3-3 for 19 points. They rank second in the Atlantic Division and tied for fourth in the Eastern Conference. Last season, through 14 games, the Penguins were 7-6-1 for 15 points.

Detroit is 9-2-2 for 20 points, leading the Central Division and ranking second in the Western Conference.

Penguins center Evgeni Malkin leads the NHL scoring race with 22 points (4-18-22). Former Penguin Marian Hossa, who signed as a free agent with Detroit in the off-season, is seventh in NHL scoring with 17 points in 13 games (8-9-17). Sidney Crosby is tied for eighth with 16 points (3-13-16).

Following the game in Detroit, the Penguins return home to host the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday and the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday at Mellon Arena. Both games are at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Penguins will wear their blue uniforms for the first time this season. These are the same uniforms the Penguins wore in last year’s NHL Winter Classic.
