Pens Look To Bounce Back In Game 2

DETROIT – For many Penguins, Saturday’s Game 1 against the Red Wings was their first Stanley Cup Final experience.

It was one they’d rather forget as Detroit posted the 4-0 victory.

“I don't know if it was the nerves. But, definitely that was the worst performance of the playoffs. We didn’t compete like we were supposed to compete and it’s a good lesson,” Penguins coach Michel Therrien said. “Detroit played a really good game. They deserve a lot of credit. In the meantime, we didn’t play our game. So I’m expecting a better effort from our team next game.”

He’s right. Following their previous two postseason losses, the Penguins have rebounded to earn victories.

“They deserved to win. They played a solid game. They played really smart,” Penguins center Maxime Talbot said. “We can’t turn the puck over like we did. Sometimes, they were first to the puck and that might have been the difference in the game.

“We have to play simple – chip the puck and do what we did all year. We need to play the simple Penguins-type of hockey,” he continued. “You have to get to the red line, chip it and then get on the puck and be first on the puck.”

Now, the Penguins find themselves in unfamiliar territory – behind in a playoff series, 1-0.

“It’s going to happen. We’re in the Finals and this is called adversity. This is going to be a long series and we want to make it a long series. We have to be ready to bounce back when we face adversity. We’ve had bad games and we’ve definitely bounced back real hard. That’s what we’re going to have to do in Game 2,” Talbot said. “It was tough, but the good thing is we have another game. The goal is to win one on the road and that’s what we’re going to try to do Monday.”

The Penguins could have changed the complexion of Game 1 if they had cashed in on one of the four power-play chances they had in the first period.

“We took some quality shots on the blue line. We didn’t get the bounces around the net,” Therrien said. “If you get the right bounce, it could give us a goal and give us confidence. It would have been nice to get confidence with our power play.”

Still, the Red Wings proved to be a formidable opponent as they turned nearly every Penguins miscue into a goal.

“Obviously, every time you go further in the playoffs you meet quality teams. And there’s no doubt this is the best team we’re facing right now,” Therrien said. “We lost one game and one thing we know, we always bounced back before, after a fair performance, and I’m expecting we’re going to bounce back next game.”
