Pens aim to force a Game 7 against Flyers

Wednesday, 08.06.2014 / 4:46 AM

(Philadelphia leads best-of-seven series, 3-2)

Big Story: Can the Penguins' magic ride continue? Or can the Flyers finally close the series after leading 3-0?
Team Scope:
Penguins: The Penguins feel they've planted the seeds of doubt in the minds of the Flyers.
Winning two straight games to force Game 6, the Penguins believe they've rattled the Flyers.
"They're not far removed from doing the same thing to another team, so they know it can be done," Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis said Saturday. "They have it in the back of their minds."
Dupuis said watching Flyers center Claude Giroux demolish his stick after the game was a sure sign of the team's self-doubt.
"I think they're there right now," Dupuis said. "Seeing Giroux breaking his stick the last game when they didn't come back in the third, I think we're in there [the Flyers' heads]."
Flyers: After watching Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury steal Game 5 for his team, can Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov return the favor in Game 6?
"I think it's time for our defense and our goalie to win us a game," Scott Hartnell said.
He added that he doesn't believe Bryzgalov has played badly, just that he thinks his goaltender can reach another level with his play.
"You need a goalie who can make those stops," he said. "Not that Bryz has played bad, but we'd love to win 1-0 and get a shutout and move on and get some rest and get some guys healthy."
Who's Hot: Penguins center Jordan Staal has six goals in the last three games, and at least a point in all five games. … Flyers left wing Jaromir Jagr has at least a point in all five games, and seven in all. He's moved from 13th to a tie for eighth with 188 points on the League's all-time playoff scoring leaderboard.
Injury Report: Penguins defenseman Paul Martin has missed the last two games with an undisclosed injury, and is questionable to for Game 6. … Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros is out with a back injury. Defenseman Nicklas Grossmann is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
Stat Pack: The Penguins have outscored the Flyers 8-0 at even strength in the last two games. The Flyers' last five-on-five goal was 27 seconds into the third period of Game 3.
Puck Drop: Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin has just two goals in the series -- both coming in Game 4 -- and would like to do more. However, his zeal to be better earned him two trips to the penalty box in Game 5, and he also put a big hit on teammate Sidney Crosby. He knows he has to be more in control if he wants to contribute in Game 6.
"Last game, [I took] stupid penalties," Malkin said Saturday. "I'm a little bit nervous. … Of course it's hard to control the emotions. Every whistle, the puck drops and two [defensemen] start coming to you and start pushing you, it's tough. It's hard, but you need to control it."
