Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik took part in the team’s optional practice Saturday afternoon at Southpointe.
Orpik has missed the Penguins’ last three postseason games with an undisclosed injury. Head coach Dan Bylsma did not provide any update to the media on his status.
The Penguins have missed having Orpik in the lineup, but Robert Bortuzzo, who is making his NHL postseason debut, has proven to be an adequate replacement in the meantime.
“It’s a big loss. He brings a different dimension to our team, but I think that Robert Bortuzzo has done a really good job,” forward Lee Stempniak said. “He brings a lot of that too. He’s physical. He skates. He’s a grading player that gets under players’ skin. He’s done a really good job too.”
The other players that took part in the optional skate – 12 total including Orpik – were forwards Jayson Megna, Chris Conner, Craig Adams, Taylor Pyatt and Brian Gibbons, defensemen Bortuzzo, Deryk Engelland and Olli Maatta and goaltenders Marc-Andre Fleury, Jeff Zatkoff and Tomas Vokoun.
