Claim to Fame: Took up a lacrosse stick to score 20 goals for his hometown Kitchener-Waterloo Braves in 2011. The junior box lacrosse team benefitted from Payerl's "secret weapon" sidearm shot.
2012-13 Season: Payerl played 44 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last year, his first full season in the Penguins organization. He recorded 10 points and 53 penalties minutes for the AHL Penguins in the regular season, then added two goals in the Calder Cup playoffs.
Numbers Never Lie: More of a skill player while in the Ontario Hockey League, Payerl’s best season in the OHL was his last, 2011-12. The winger scored a career-high 22 goals and added 25 assists for the Belleville Bulls. His 47 points that year were 3rd on the Bulls, and his 106 penalty minutes were also a team-high.
Pens' Take: “He was an overage kid who spent some time in Wheeling, but he's big, he can skate and shoot the puck. He bangs, he crashes. He's a guy you believe could fill a role at the bottom of your lineup."– Tom Fitzgerald
Payerl on his new style of offense: "I think it's just trying to play into my power forward style of game … Bring a physical element to my game every night. I think I can chip in in different areas as well. I think I can be an offensive threat, play well in my D-zone as well."
