‘Penguins Pond’ Opens for Public Skating Friday at 2 p.m. at Highmark Stadium

“Penguins Pond,” the Pittsburgh Penguins’ unique outdoor ice rink, will open for public skating Friday at 2 p.m. at Highmark Stadium – located at Station Square near the Fort Pitt Bridge.

Highmark Stadium, new home of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, offers a spectacular setting for public skating and youth and amateur hockey – with a breathtaking view of the city skyline as its backdrop. The rink will be open daily for public skating through January 13. It is presented by 84 Lumber.

\Public skating sessions this weekend will be 2-11 p.m. on Friday, 3-11 p.m. on Saturday and 3-7 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $7, and rental skates are $3.

PIHL high school hockey action at Penguins Pond starts Monday, December 17 at 5 p.m. when Thomas Jefferson takes on Kittanning. There will be more than 25 varsity and junior varsity games played at the Highmark Stadium site.

Penguins Pond also will host amateur hockey games, scrimmages and practices. Special events include a “Mascot Skate” Saturday at 6 p.m. and a “Skate With The Greats” session with Pittsburgh Penguins alumni on Friday, January 11 at 6 p.m.

Friday’s 2 p.m. grand opening will be the first public event at Highmark Stadium. The $10.2 million multi-sport and entertainment facility will officially open in the spring.
