Pittsburgh Penguins Fan Blog: For the Fans, by the Fans

How long have you been following the Pens and how did you become a fan?
I began following the Penguins in the 1998-1999 season when I was 7 years old and living in Pittsburgh. I'm not sure what sparked my instantaneous love for the team, but I would cut the Pens articles out of the paper every day and tape them to my bedroom walls. I watched every game and knew every statistic and bio of most of the players, including my favorite player, Martin Straka. I loved the team and the sport so much that it inspired me to want to start playing hockey. At the time, hockey wasn't too popular as a girls' sport, so it was difficult to find a good place to play. However, not much later, my family moved to Ohio and there was a U-15 women's team in my town. Without a question, I joined the team and loved every second of it. It helped me to completely understand and love the game even more. I followed the Pens' every game while in Ohio- if it wasn't on TV, I would listen to it on the radio online or check the scores online as the game went on. Since then, I have been a diehard fan. Penguins memorabilia can be seen on my walls, car, clothes and more. I am currently in college at Ohio University and can't be in Pittsburgh for every game, but during the season, if I don't have access to watch the game at home, I will always go to a public restaurant or bar where it is playing. Whenever I am in Pittsburgh I try to make it to a game (especially if I get AE Student Rush tickets!), and my plan is to move back to Pittsburgh as soon as I graduate and attend games regularly.

Who is your favorite Penguins player (past or present)?
Evgeni Malkin

Tell us about your favorite Penguins memory.
My favorite memory is when Mario Lemieux returned to the Penguins on December 27, 2000. I was only 9 years old at the time, but I can still remember the details of the broadcast, where I was for it, and sitting in front of the TV, wearing all of my Pens gear. I was so moved by it and the impact that he has had on the team and the city of Pittsburgh. Another favorite memory is when I received 2011 Winter Classic tickets for Christmas. My parents put them in a large gift bag so that I didn't expect it, and when I opened it and saw them, it was the first time I had ever cried of excitement in my life. Even though they lost that game, it was one of the most exciting and memorable experiences of my life.

On game day I usually...
On a game day I usually first check the Pittsburgh Penguins official website to see the Game Day Report. Then I get all geared up in one of my many Pens jerseys, and my lucky Penguins socks. If the game isn't on TV, I listen to it online or go to a local bar where almost all of the games are played. I watch the game and cheer on my team!

Congratulations, Alexandra!
