Pittsburgh Penguins Fan Blog: For the Fans, by the Fans
July 21, 2012: Fan of the Day - Ben S.

Ben S.
Butler, PA

How long have you been following the Pens and how did you become a fan?
I have been following the Pens since 1992 - I didn't even know what hockey was until the Pens won their second Stanley Cup - I was 9 years old at the time. From there I quickly developed a passion for the game and the Penguins, starting small playing at the local dek hockey rink and moving up to roller and ice hockey. I still play regularly - I've moved around a bit for work and one of the first things I look for when relocating to a new area is the nearest ice rink and if they have an adult league. I've been fortunate to be able to attend usually a couple of Pens games each year for about the past decade.

Who is your favorite Penguins player (past or present)?
Sidney Crosby

Tell us about your favorite Penguins memory.
I have many great Penguins memories, dating back to the first games I attended in the Civic Arena in the mid-90's, including a heated game 7 1st round playoff victory against Washington. My favorite memory would have to be going to a game in the winter of 2006 with my Dad and Grand-dad. One of my cousins surprised us with the tickets (my Grand-dad had played hockey since a very young age and was easily as passionate about the Penguins as me). It was great to watch the game with them. Two years later my Grand-dad passed away (he just missed seeing the Pens win the cup and the Steelers win the Superbowl in 2009), but to this day I'm very grateful for having the chance to share a hockey game in Pittsburgh with him and my Dad. I also lived outside of Philadelphia for 3 years (it was tough...hate the Flyers) and got to go to game 4 of their playoff match-up in 2008. They may have lost that game (the only Penguins loss of the series) but I was proud to represent Pittsburgh in an unfriendly territory and continue to do so in my current location (Fayetteville NC) when the Pens play the Canes.

On a game day I usually...
When I am back home I go to games with my Dad. We throw on our jerseys and like to go early before the arena opens and always park in the private lot between the Civic Arena and the UPMC (formerly US Steel) building. Once we're allowed in we make it to our seats and almost always settle in with a pepperoni pizza. The jerseys have so far amazingly survived without any stains.

Congratulations, Ben!
